Maybe you are itching to put down some new laminate flooring in your kitchen. Or maybe a more drastic project like ripping up carpets and laying down real wood flooring is what you’re hoping to do. Whenever the Christmas decorations come down, it always feels like a natural next step to improve or change some part of the home.

The trend in modern houses is to either carpet the whole house, bar the kitchen, with cheap neutral carpets, that scrub up easily and blend with any sort of dcor. Or for those remodelling older houses, it often works down to put laminate floors down everywhere and then get some rugs to dress up the different rooms. Laminate flooring is great for families with heavy traffic and can cope with the inevitable wear and tear that small children bring to a home. It’s easy to wash as well.

However rugs are often a lot more expensive that you initially counted on. A good sized rug to cover a large area can sometimes cost as much as a cheap carpet. Yet a rug holds the advantage of being able to be lifted up and mopped under and moved out of the way if need be. Often the rug as well can give a room the best of both worlds.

It’s really down to personal taste. There will always be those who prefer carpets and would happily vacuum every day than have to dust and mop! Yet to others carpets feel like a never quite clean pool of dust where hard flooring can be properly cleaned and much easier to live with if you have allergies.

Your new decorating plans may require a high powered vacuum cleaner that goes after allergens and dust that will keep your carpets looking fresh with a build in carpet shampooing system as well. Or you may be in the market for a good broom and a dusting spray, as well as a good mop! It really is down to personal taste, budget, and family needs, and not so much about following trends or a right or wrong in decorating.
